Back in the 90s anything called a smoothie or salad or wrap was automatically assumed to be healthy. Actually so was any juice and even diet soda, to a point. There is so much more information available now, it’s awesome. Back then it was low fat everything, without taking fiber, sugar, or protein into the equation. Really it’s just calories in v. calories out, but protein and fiber are really important when it comes to keeping you full.
I learned the other day that raspberries have more fiber per serving than almost all other fruit (except pears and apples, but I’m not a huge fan of either most of the time). One cup of raspberries has only 64 calories, but 8 grams of fiber (5 grams of sugar). Plus, like all berries, it has antioxidants which are great for looking young on the outside and staying young on the inside. A few months ago I bought some powdered greens and still had been to afraid to use them. Green smoothies do not look good to me. But the good part about this smoothie is that the raspberries are so intensely pink, the overtake any green/brown color (yuck).
I pretty much always add a banana to smoothies because it gives it a creamy texture and good body. I keep a container of frozen bananas in my freezer and refill it when I notice bananas starting to turn. I peel them and slice them into quarters. That way I know how much I’m using, and they’re easy to portion off.
I like to add Greek yogurt because of the texture and protein. I use nonfat regular because it’s so versatile (I keep it around for a sour cream substitute, too).
If you don’t want to add any sweetener, that’s okay, but I thought it needed some to keep it kid-friendly. My favorite is stevia.
Each 8 ounce serving has 136 calories, 7 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, 7 grams of sugar, 3 grams of fat, 78% of your daily vitamin C, and 31% of your daily calcium. Enjoy!
